Historia y fideos en Arashi Ramen
Arashi Ramen is one of the most popular Japanese restaurants in the area.
But you might not realize that the restaurant serves as a slice of history. Outside the restaurant is a bench dedicated to the memories of Tamayo and Matsutake Mikami, who once farmed the land that is now Parkway Village Shopping Center, which houses Arashi Ramen. During World War Two, the Mikami family was relocated to internment camps along with thousands of other Japanese U.S. residents and citizens. During that time, four of Mikami's ten children volunteered to serve their country. As an additional nod to history, the poles behind the bench are engraved to resemble stalks of the sweet corn the Mikami family was known for growing. The site is a moving reminder of the pivotal role that Japanese immigrants and their children played in Seattle Southside's history, the injustices they faced, and the resilience of their community.
